Rain, night or traffic are no longer excuses. The Turbo Trainer has become the secret weapon of triathletes to optimise their time. One hour of indoor cycling is equivalent to 1.5 hours on the road: no freewheels, no stops, just pure power. Connected to apps like Zwift or Rouvy, training becomes an immersive video game.

As Opentri explains very well, the home trainer is not just a simple alternative to bad weather; it's a performance booster. Indoors, there are no red lights, no downhill sections to rest, and no cars. The result: 1 hour on a home trainer is roughly equivalent to 1.5 hours on the road. It's the ultimate efficiency tool if you have a busy schedule.
There are three main categories available on the market:
Direct Drive: This is the current standard (e.g. Wahoo Kickr, Tacx Neo). You remove your back wheel and mount the bike directly onto the trainer’s cassette.
Advantages: Exceptional watt accuracy, near-silent operation (only the chain is heard), and impressive realism in slope simulations.
Wheel-On Resistance: The bike remains whole, and the back wheel rolls against a roller.
Advantages: More accessible budget. However, be mindful of tire wear (consider a specific blue or red tire) and the increased noise.
Rollers: You ride in balance on three cylinders.
Advantages: Great for working on your pedalling technique and core stability, but offers less resistance for pure strength exercises.
Nowadays, indoor training is closely linked to platforms like Zwift or Rouvy. With a connected home trainer, the resistance automatically adjusts to the virtual terrain.
The key feature for training is the ERG mode. If you set a session for 250 watts, the trainer enforces this resistance, regardless of your cadence or gear. You have to do the work; there's no cheating!
Indoors, you don't have the wind from speed to cool you down. Your body temperature rises quickly, leading to an increased heart rate and reduced performance (cardiac drift). As Opentri recommends, a powerful fan is not an option; it's a must to manage your long sessions without overheating.
