The human body loses water quickly during exercise. A loss of just 1% of your body weight can lead to a 10% drop in physical performance. On long distances or trails, waiting until you're thirsty is already a mistake. The hydration pack allows you to sip regularly throughout the course, delaying the onset of cramps and hitting "the wall".
The current trend is clearly towards the vest. Unlike a traditional backpack that rests on your shoulders and bounces with each impact, the vest wraps around your torso.
